According to media reports, South Korea's automobile exports soared to a historic high in February, driven by strong international demand for hybrid vehicles. This remarkable performance comes at a time when concerns over new U.S. tariff policies loom, showcasing the resilience of South Korea's automotive industry. Domestic production and sales also saw significant growth.

The latest report from South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy shows that the country's automobile production rose by 17.1% year-on-year in February, reaching 352,000 units. This marks the first time in over a decade that monthly production has exceeded 350,000 units. Both domestic sales and exports saw robust double-digit growth. Auto exports alone reached 233,000 units, up 17.3% from February last year. The total export value surged 17.8% year-on-year to a record-breaking $6.07 billion.
Analysts attribute much of this success to hybrid vehicles. In February, South Korea's hybrid vehicle exports surged by 61.7%. The growing global demand for eco-friendly vehicles has fueled this rapid expansion in hybrid car sales.
South Korea's domestic market also showed strong performance, with February car sales rising 14.8% to 133,000 units. This growth was supported by government initiatives aimed at boosting automobile sales, including a temporary reduction in personal consumption tax on passenger vehicles. Additionally, government subsidies for electric vehicles (EVs) played a crucial role in driving sales. In February, EV sales in South Korea skyrocketed by 298.1% to 14,000 units.
However, despite these impressive figures, concerns remain over potential tariff risks. Given former U.S. President Donald Trump's warning of possible import tariffs on foreign cars, analysts fear that such measures could impact the future performance of the auto industry. While South Korea's automotive sector has shown strong growth, the implementation of new U.S. tariffs could offset these gains, making strategic contingency planning essential.
Industry experts urge South Korea's automotive sector to stay vigilant and proactively address potential trade challenges. The Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy plans to conduct a comprehensive review of the situation and establish a special task force dedicated to handling U.S.-related automotive trade issues, gathering input from industry stakeholders.
As the global trade landscape continues to evolve, the coming months will be crucial for industry players in formulating strategies to sustain momentum and ensure long-term growth.
