All General Motors Electric Vehicles To Support Bidirectional Charging By 2026

Soon, General Motors' electric vehicles will be able to act as backup generators for homes. The company plans to provide bidirectional charging capabilities for all its electric vehicles from 2026 onward, with the Chevrolet Silverado EV RST being the first model to feature this.

Bidirectional charging allows electric vehicles to supply power to other devices using the energy stored in their batteries, such as powering a house during an outage. With Chevrolet releasing the Silverado EV, General Motors' first-generation Ultium Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) bidirectional charging stations will be available in the fourth quarter of this year. While GM hasn’t disclosed pricing details, the company mentioned that the bidirectional charging stations would be priced only slightly higher than standard charging stations of the same capacity.

General Motors suggests that this technology will enable consumers to store and transfer energy, helping them offset electricity costs during peak periods and mitigate the impacts of power outages.

Hoss Hassani, GM’s Vice President in charge of charging and energy, anticipates that initial sales of bidirectional charging stations will vary by state. He expects the highest sales to be in California, Texas, New York, Michigan, and Florida. "We'll be rolling out this technology nationwide, but we expect some states will adopt faster while others may be slower," he said.

Hassani also noted that, for now, the most significant benefit for consumers is having a backup power source during outages. In the future, once utility companies establish plans allowing users to schedule charging during off-peak times, users can save on their electricity bills by charging when rates are the lowest. In the long run, Hassani envisions consumers could even profit by transferring energy from their vehicles back into the grid.

Apart from General Motors, other automakers have also introduced this technology in their electric vehicles. Ford previously incorporated bidirectional charging technology in its F-150 Lightning electric pickup. Tesla also announced this year that its electric vehicles will start using this technology from 2025.
