Tesla CFO Resigns

Zachary Kirkhorn, Tesla's former Chief Financial Officer, has resigned, sparking new speculation about the company's succession at the top.

On August 7, the company indicated in a regulatory document that Kirkhorn had left the company on August 4. He will continue to serve in an undisclosed role "to support a seamless transition" until the end of this year.

Tesla announced that Chief Accounting Officer Vaibhav Taneja will serve as Acting CFO. At an investor meeting in March of this year, Elon Musk invited 16 executives to join him on stage, but Taneja was not included. Taneja has held multiple positions at Tesla and became the company's Chief Accounting Officer in 2019. Before this, Taneja had worked at PwC in India and the United States.

Kirkhorn joined Tesla in 2010, initially serving as a Senior Financial Analyst. He was promoted five times, with the most recent promotion to CFO occurring in early 2019 when Kirkhorn was just 34 years old. Before Kirkhorn took over, Tesla was operating at a loss, occasionally burning through more than one billion dollars in cash per quarter. Since Kirkhorn became CFO, Tesla has remained profitable, repaid approximately $10 billion in debt over the past three years, earned an investment rating, and joined the S&P 500 Index in December 2020.

Kirkhorn was a vital representative for the company in front of shareholders. His speeches at Tesla's quarterly earnings calls were typically detailed, and his cost-control efforts were well-received by investors. Kirkhorn's calm and steady demeanor during earnings calls contrasted starkly with Musk's flamboyant rhetoric.

On August 4, Kirkhorn wrote on LinkedIn, "Being part of this company has been a unique experience, and I am incredibly proud of the work we have accomplished together. I also want to thank Musk for his leadership and optimism, which has inspired many."

Musk tweeted his thanks to Kirkhorn and acknowledged that his tenure was not easy, though he did not reveal Kirkhorn's future plans. Kirkhorn was once considered a prime contender to replace Musk as CEO, so his departure has again raised uncertainty about Tesla's leadership.
