Which is Better: Zigzag Gear Shifter or Straight Gear Shifter?

Most newly launched cars today come equipped with automatic transmissions, as they are generally more convenient for daily use compared to manual transmissions. Both zigzag gear shifters and straight gear shifters have their advantages, but in everyday use, the zigzag design helps reduce the likelihood of accidental misoperation, offering a better overall user experience.

Toyota has been using zigzag gear shifters for many years. With this type of shifter, you only need to move the gear lever to the corresponding position to change gears.

P (Park): This gear is used when the vehicle is stopped. It locks the rotating parts inside the transmission, preventing the vehicle from moving.

R (Reverse): This gear is selected when the vehicle needs to move backward. To engage reverse, press the brake and shift the lever to "R" by pressing the shift lock.

N (Neutral): In neutral, the engine's power is not transmitted to the wheels, making it suitable for situations like traffic jams or temporary stops.

D (Drive): This is the forward gear. The vehicle will automatically shift gears based on its speed, and the driver only needs to control the accelerator.

3 (Third Gear): This restricts the transmission to third gear and below. The engine will perform engine braking, which is useful on downhill roads. Shift from "D" to "3" by pushing the lever left.

2 (Second Gear): This restricts the transmission to second gear and below, ideal for uphill and downhill driving. Shift from "3" to "2" by pushing the lever down.

L (Low Gear): This limits the transmission to the lowest gear. It's useful for downhill driving, using engine braking to prevent brake fade from prolonged braking. Shift from "2" to "L" by pushing the lever down.
