Automotive Air Conditioning Refrigerant Charging Procedure

The refrigerant charging process for a car's air conditioning system is a critical step to ensure the system operates correctly. First, connect the high- and low-pressure connectors of the manifold pressure gauge to the air conditioning compressor; this marks the starting point of the procedure. Rotate the screws to allow refrigerant flow and purge air from the system, preparing for the next steps.

Manually open the low-pressure control valve to let the refrigerant (Freon) enter the cooling system, ensuring the system pressure stays within the proper range of 150 to 250 kPa. For the high-pressure control valve, the same steps apply, but make sure the pressure reaches a high value of 1300 to 1500 kPa.

In addition, connecting the refrigerant pressure gauge and performing a vacuum evacuation are essential steps when charging refrigerant. By adjusting the low-pressure gauge, closing the high-pressure gauge, and conducting timely pressure checks, accuracy and stability in the refrigerant amount can be maintained.

For optimal performance, the ideal pressure indicators are approximately 150 kPa for high pressure and 30 kPa for low pressure, avoiding large discrepancies between the two. If the procedure is complex or unfamiliar, it is advisable to seek help from a professional. While repair shops may charge an additional service fee, ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the vehicle's air conditioning system is a worthwhile investment.
