Vietnamese Electric Car Manufacturer VinFast Recalls 6,000 Vehicles

According to Reuters, on February 6th, Vietnamese electric car manufacturer VinFast announced a recall of nearly 6,000 VF 5 vehicles sold in the domestic market of Vietnam to replace the combination switch.

VinFast stated in a statement that the recalled vehicles were produced from March to December last year, and only one vehicle that had been sold was found to have a switch problem, but no accidents have occurred so far. The company stated that during testing, if the driver forcefully pulls the combination switch when turning on the ignition, the front lights of some VF 5 Plus vehicles would go out, and the cause of the problem is a design error in the control circuit board supplied by a component supplier.

In 2023, VinFast delivered nearly 35,000 vehicles, lower than its annual target of at least 40,000 vehicles, due to slow electric vehicle adoption rates in some regions, intense competition, and economic uncertainty. However, VinFast pointed out that in the last quarter of 2023, its deliveries increased by 35% compared to the third quarter of last year, reaching 13,513 vehicles.

VinFast did not provide sales data for individual markets, but in the second and third quarters of last year, about 60% of the company's deliveries came from its affiliate Green SM (GSM). GSM is a taxi operator and lessor based in Vietnam, mainly owned by VinFast CEO Pham Nhat Vuong. Currently, VF 5 Plus vehicles are only sold in the Vietnamese market.

In May last year, VinFast announced a recall of some vehicles in the United States due to a software error causing malfunctions in the heads-up display (HUD), but the company did not disclose how many vehicles would be recalled. According to a statement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the United States, the error could result in a blank screen on the display.
