The UK Is Set To Invest £2 Billion in The Automotive Industry To Support The Development Of Electric Vehicles

According to Bloomberg, the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt, announced a £4.5 billion (approximately $5.6 billion) fund for eight manufacturing sectors, including automotive and green industries, crucial for the country's economic growth.

In an email statement on the evening of November 17, the UK Treasury outlined that £2 billion of this fund will be allocated to the automotive sector, £960 million for clean energy, £975 million for aerospace, and £520 million for life sciences. However, signs suggest that the UK's financial situation is tight, and these funds will only be available to businesses by 2025.

As per the Treasury's statement, the government's funding for the automotive industry will support electric vehicle manufacturers and their supply chains, while the aerospace funding will aid in the development of zero-carbon aircraft equipment. This funding is part of the upcoming "Advanced Manufacturing Plan" set to be announced.

Additionally, the UK government will unveil a battery strategy, outlining plans to establish a competitive supply chain for the battery industry by 2030. It will also establish a Hydrogen Industry Special Working Group to maximize investments in the UK's hydrogen propulsion system manufacturing.

Hunt is attempting to boost the UK economy without triggering inflation, but his fiscal space is limited. Treasury officials state that Hunt has around £15 billion in remaining space before he starts preparing new policies. While this is an increase from the record-low of £6.5 billion in March, it is still considered low by historical standards.

Hunt mentioned that the government's funds will attract more private investment, stating, "Our £4.5 billion will leverage many times that from the private sector," and it will "in turn drive our economic growth, creating more technically advanced and higher-paying jobs in new industries."
