According to Bloomberg, Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt has started building a battery factory in northern Germany for electric vehicle production.

Northvolt's German factory will be powered by wind energy and is expected to employ around 3,000 workers, with operations set to begin in 2026. The factory aims to achieve an annual capacity of 60GWh, making it Germany's largest battery factory capable of supplying battery products for approximately one million electric vehicles.

The total investment for Northvolt's German factory is estimated to be around €4.5 billion, with over €900 million in aid and guarantees from the German government. Germany is providing such substantial support primarily to prevent the project from being moved to the United States. Earlier, the European Commission issued a statement that if the German government did not provide €700 million in direct funding and €202 million in guarantees, Northvolt would consider establishing a new factory in the United States.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated that Northvolt's factory would contribute to supporting Germany's future as a manufacturing base. On March 25, during the factory's opening ceremony, Scholz stated, "Quality cars other than internal combustion engine vehicles will continue to be a backbone of our industry sector, and for this, we need batteries made in Germany, made in Europe." Northvolt is the only mainstream electric vehicle battery manufacturer in Europe, with clients including Volkswagen and BMW. Additionally, the company is also establishing a factory in Canada.

Furthermore, Northvolt CEO Peter Carlsson noted that while there has been a slowdown in the growth of electric vehicle sales, the fundamental direction of electric vehicles remains unchanged. Carlsson pointed out, "We see a slight dip in the overall trend of electric cars today, but I think when you step back and look at the transformation, the big trend and the potential for change are there. There is no doubt that we are moving from (internal combustion engine vehicles) to electric vehicles."
