Scania Establishes Charging Solutions Company To Support Transition To Electric Mobility

To assist customers in transitioning to electric mobility, Swedish truck manufacturer Scania CV AB has announced the establishment of Erinion, a new company specializing in private and semi-public charging solutions. This strategic move will install 40,000 new charging points at Scania customer locations and strengthen the Scania Group's electric mobility services within the future transportation ecosystem.

The new company, Erinion, aims to provide solutions for depot and destination charging to accelerate the adoption of electric trucks, thereby achieving Scania's goal of promoting a shift towards a sustainable transportation system. Erinion's solutions will enable customers to seamlessly transition to zero-emission fleets and extend uptime. This will be a crucial factor in Scania's goal of achieving 50% electric vehicle sales in Europe by 2030.

Industry research indicates that depot charging will become the primary energy source for both short-haul and long-haul operations. As a complement to public charging networks, depot and destination charging can provide dedicated charging infrastructure at customers' home depots or other designated locations. This approach has numerous advantages: predictable charging schedules ensure vehicles are fully charged, increasing uptime, and ultimately maximizing operational efficiency and cost savings through predictable and stable energy costs tailored to each customer's specific operations.

By providing predictable energy costs and customized solutions for each customer's operations, depot and destination charging can also optimize charging power levels and schedules while enhancing battery life and overall vehicle efficiency. Moreover, depot charging typically occurs during off-peak hours, resulting in lower and more controllable electricity costs, while destination charging can be flexibly carried out during driver breaks or deliveries.

Scania's research, validated by customer pilot projects, reveals significant cost-saving potential with enhanced charging solutions. Customers' investment requirements are expected to be reduced by 50%, with annual operational cost savings of €15,000 per truck.

Today, depot charging technology is becoming increasingly advanced. It encompasses more than just providing chargers, grid connections, and installations. Through this new company, Scania's transport customers will have access to advanced integrated software and hardware, as well as operational services and support. This dedicated modular solution can be offered through standard resale models (cash payment) or hybrid flexible pricing models, allowing customers to combine down payments, finance leases, and rolling fees for services and maintenance.

The new company will initially operate in Sweden, Norway, the UK, the Netherlands, France, and Germany, with plans to expand globally in due course. This approach ensures that all types of businesses, regardless of vehicle brand, can benefit from Erinion's charging infrastructure and operational services. By 2030, an estimated 230,000 electric trucks will be on European roads. To support this growth, Erinion plans to install at least 40,000 charging points at customer locations by 2030.

Jonas Hernlund, Head of Energy and Infrastructure at Scania Group, explained, "With our solutions, customers can have peace of mind and focus on their core business while the dedicated charging division handles hardware, software, financing, and operational services for large-scale charging with outstanding quality and cost-effectiveness."

Gustaf Sundell, Executive Vice President and Head of Venture and New Business at Scania Group, stated, "During the transformation, the transport system will be redefined. Our newly established charging solutions company is a prime example, playing a crucial role in the future transportation ecosystem as we transition to electric mobility."
