According to media reports, Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt has announced that its CEO, Peter Carlsson, is stepping down after the company filed for bankruptcy protection.
Peter Carlsson, 54, has served as Northvolt's CEO since the company's founding in 2016. He stated that Northvolt needs to raise between $1 billion and $1.2 billion to resume operations. "The Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection agreement allows Northvolt to restructure over time, fulfill commitments to customers and suppliers, and enhance operational performance, ultimately preparing for long-term growth," Carlsson explained.

Carlsson added that it is the right time to appoint new leadership for Northvolt. He will continue to serve as a board member and senior advisor.
Northvolt's leadership team will now include CFO Pia Aaltonen-Forsell and President of Battery Operations Matthias Arleth, who will take on the role of COO. They will be supported by Chief Restructuring Officer Scott Millar as they jointly steer the company. The search for a new CEO has already begun.
On November 21, Northvolt filed for bankruptcy protection in a Texas court. The company disclosed that its cash reserves had dwindled to approximately $30 million, enough to sustain operations for one week, while its debts exceeded $5.8 billion. Northvolt has secured $100 million in new financing to support the bankruptcy process and ensure continued operations.
Northvolt employs around 6,600 people across seven countries. The company expects to complete its restructuring by the first quarter of 2025 and is actively seeking one or more partners to fund its recovery and ensure long-term sustainability, including completing its major battery plant projects in Germany and Canada.
In its bankruptcy filing, Northvolt stated:
"Any stakeholder interested in pursuing a transaction should promptly contact Rothschild Bank and submit proposals by early December."
The company has also engaged financial services firm Hilco Global to assist with orderly liquidation if necessary. Despite the uncertainties ahead, Northvolt has expressed its readiness to engage with all stakeholders.
Northvolt remains optimistic that, under the Chapter 11 protection framework, it can achieve a value-maximizing capital restructuring or sale through multi-billion-dollar investments, as well as its pioneering facilities and technologies.
