Musk Responds To The Biggest Challenge For FSD in China: Bus Lanes

Tesla recently released its Q4 2024 and full-year financial report. During the post-earnings interview, when asked about the biggest challenge for Full Self-Driving (FSD) in China, Elon Musk responded that bus lanes pose the greatest difficulty. He explained, "China is a huge market, and we do face some challenges because China does not allow us to transfer training data abroad, while the U.S. government won't allow us to conduct training in China either."

At the same time, Musk revealed that Tesla is training its FSD system using Chinese road videos found online and then feeding them into a simulator. He added, "Bus lanes in China are one of the biggest challenges for FSD deployment. They are very complex-at certain times of the day, cars are allowed to enter, but at other times, they are not. If you mistakenly drive into a bus lane at the wrong time, you will immediately receive a fine. Regardless, Tesla will solve this issue."

Tesla's FSD Roadmap

According to Tesla's plans, the company aims to launch a fully autonomous FSD version-without human driver supervision-by June 2025 at its Austin, Texas, facility. Musk stated that Tesla vehicles at the Fremont, California, factory have already achieved this level of autonomy, and the Texas factory will soon follow. This unsupervised FSD feature is expected to be rolled out across North America by 2027.

Additionally, Tesla is actively working to bring its driver-supervised intelligent driving system to the European and Chinese markets by 2025.
