Lamborghini's First Electric Vehicle Delayed Until 2029

According to Reuters, on December 16, Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Volkswagen Group's Lamborghini brand, stated that the company will continue producing cars in Italy and plans to release its first electric vehicle in 2029. Winkelmann explained that the market for electric luxury sports cars is not yet mature enough for full electrification.

Lamborghini had previously announced that its first electric vehicle would be launched in 2028. In comparison, Ferrari, Lamborghini's Italian competitor, is set to debut its first electric car in the first quarter of next year.

Winkelmann told the media: "We don't think 2029 is late for launching an electric car. In our segment, the market won't be ready for electrification by 2025 or 2026." Starting this year, Lamborghini will introduce three hybrid models, including the Urus SE SUV, the Revuelto sports car, and the Temerario sports car, which was launched this summer. The Temerario's pre-tax price exceeds €300,000 (approximately $315,000).

Winkelmann emphasized that Lamborghini is not in a rush to transition to electrification. The company is also waiting for clearer regulatory guidance from the European Union, which plans to reassess the ban on new internal combustion engine vehicle sales in 2035 during a 2026 review. "We think this is the right approach to the future. The current discussions around synthetic fuels present an opportunity for us," he said.

Additionally, Winkelmann reiterated that there are no plans to spin off Lamborghini from the Volkswagen Group and emphasized that Lamborghini vehicles will always be manufactured in Italy. When asked whether the election of Donald Trump as the next U.S. president and his potential tariffs on European-made products would affect Lamborghini's business, Winkelmann declined to comment but added: "We cannot imagine manufacturing Lamborghini cars anywhere outside of Italy or Sant'Agata."
