Honda Accused Of Undermining Union Activities At Indiana Plant

According to media reports, Kayla Blado, a spokesperson for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), stated on June 20 that the board has accused Honda of unlawfully suppressing union activities at a plant in Greensburg, Indiana, infringing on workers' rights.

Blado indicated that the NLRB's General Counsel filed a lawsuit on June 18, alleging that Honda forced workers to remove United Auto Workers (UAW) stickers from their safety helmets, illegally surveilled employees, and threatened to discipline union supporters.

A Honda spokesperson, in a statement, said these allegations are unfounded and the company "looks forward to the hearing." The spokesperson remarked, "Filing unfair labor practice charges is a common tactic by unions to generate publicity and attention for their organizing activities."

Honda's Greensburg plant employs over 2,400 people. Organizing activities at this plant are part of a broader UAW initiative nationwide to unionize workers at auto plants that have historically resisted union formation.

Last month, the UAW lost an election representing nearly 5,000 workers at Mercedes-Benz's Alabama plant. The UAW has requested the NLRB to order a re-election, accusing the luxury automaker of violating various worker rights.

The UAW has also filed complaints with the NLRB accusing Hyundai and Volkswagen of illegally interfering with union activities. Both companies deny any wrongdoing and state that they respect workers' rights to choose whether to join a union.
