GM To Increase Production At Incheon Plant in South Korea By 9% This Year

According to Yonhap News Agency, on April 16, the labor union of General Motors' South Korean unit announced that the company plans to increase production at its Incheon plant by approximately 9% this year. This move has somewhat eased concerns that GM might withdraw from the South Korean market due to uncertainties surrounding U.S. tariff policies.

The labor union stated that the automaker recently revealed plans to produce an additional 21,000 vehicles this year at its plant in Bupyeong, Incheon, located west of Seoul. This increase represents about 9% of the plant's annual production capacity of 250,000 units.

The union emphasized that the decision to boost production at GM Korea's facility signals the company's continued commitment to using South Korea as a major export hub. "The decision to raise output will likely help ease some of our workers' anxiety," a union official said.

GM Korea's union plans to meet with the company's management to incorporate the updated production schedule into next month's work plan. Additionally, the two sides are expected to hold a separate labor-management meeting later this month to discuss strategies for dealing with U.S. tariff policies and ensuring stable operations.

According to a report by Chosun Ilbo at the end of March, GM Korea produced a total of 497,000 vehicles in 2024, with approximately 419,000 units (84% of the total) exported to the U.S. market. The Incheon Bupyeong plant manufactures the Trailblazer SUV, while the Changwon plant produces the Trax crossover model.

Over the years, GM Korea has leveraged South Korea's well-developed supplier network and skilled labor force to supply cost-effective vehicles to the U.S. market. However, this strategy seems to be facing headwinds under the pressure of increased U.S. import tariffs. In response, there has been growing speculation in the Korean auto industry that GM might exit the market due to the U.S. government's 25% tariff on imported vehicles.
