Ford's Q2 EV Sales Surge, Second Only To Tesla in The US

In the first half of 2024, Ford's electric vehicle sales in the United States increased by 72% year-over-year. According to foreign media reports, in the second quarter, Ford once again surpassed General Motors in US electric vehicle sales, ranking second in the US electric vehicle market and is poised to close the gap with Tesla.

In the second quarter of this year, Ford sold 23,957 electric vehicles in the US, a 61% increase year-over-year (compared to 14,843 EVs sold in the same period last year). Additionally, sales of Ford's hybrid vehicles increased by 55% year-over-year. However, sales of internal combustion engine vehicles decreased by 5% year-over-year.

Sales of several Ford electric vehicles achieved double-digit growth. Notably, sales of the Ford F-150 Lightning increased by 76.9% year-over-year to 7,902 units. Despite new competitors such as the Tesla Cybertruck and Chevrolet Silverado EV RST entering the US market, the Ford F-150 Lightning remained the best-selling electric truck in the US in the first half of this year, with a total of 15,654 units sold.

The second-quarter sales of the Ford Mustang Mach-E increased by 46.5% year-over-year to 12,645 units. In the first half of this year, the Ford Mustang Mach-E delivered a total of 22,234 units, marking its best performance since its launch. Sales of Ford's electric van, the E-Transit, continued to rise in the second quarter, with a 95.5% year-over-year increase to 3,410 units.

In the first half of 2024, Ford sold a total of 44,189 electric vehicles in the US, a 72% increase year-over-year from 25,709 units in the same period last year.

Ford CEO Jim Farley stated that Ford is shifting towards smaller, more affordable electric vehicles to narrow the gap with Tesla and to counter competitors like BYD globally. Farley emphasized the importance of smaller electric vehicles in "driving the decarbonization of American society and the development of electric vehicles," addressing Americans' love for "big vehicles."

The surge in Ford's electric vehicle sales in the US market is enough to keep it ahead of General Motors. In the US market, GM delivered a total of 21,930 electric vehicles in the second quarter and 38,355 electric vehicles in the first half of 2024.

General Motors is also ramping up production by introducing new models, with electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Blazer, Equinox, and Silverado set to hit the US market soon. While Tesla did not provide specific sales data for each region, its global electric vehicle sales in the second quarter exceeded expectations, with a total of 443,956 EVs delivered, maintaining its number one position in the US market.

As competition in the US electric vehicle market intensifies, other competitors, including Hyundai and Kia, also set new electric vehicle sales records in the second quarter. For example, Hyundai's IONIQ 5 set a new sales record, with 18,728 units sold in the first half of the year. Meanwhile, sales of Kia's first three-row electric SUV, the EV9, are also on the rise.
