European Car Sales in July: MG May Surpass Tesla

According to preliminary data from the market research firm Dataforce, MG's sales in Europe doubled in July this year, potentially surpassing Tesla.

Overall, last month, sales grew for most brands in Europe, while 16 brands saw a decline. Among them, ten brands, including Lotus, achieved growth in the triple or quadruple digits. XiaoPeng (XPeng Motors) saw a year-on-year increase of 786% with sales of 124 vehicles; Lexus's sales surged by 114% due to strong demand for its midsize premium SUV model, NX. Other brands with significant growth include Polestar, Smart, BYD, and NIO.

Twenty-seven brands experienced double-digit growth, including Subaru, Volkswagen Group's Cupra, Stellantis's Alfa Romeo, and Ford. Excluding Volkswagen and Porsche, twelve brands, including Lancia, Mercedes-Benz, Maserati, and Land Rover, had growth rates below the market average of 17%.

Last month, MG had sales of 15,991 units, a year-on-year surge of 176%, with an increase of 10,193 units, nearly half of which were attributed to MG4. Tesla's sales were 15,139 units, skyrocketing 760% year-on-year, with the Model Y contributing 62% of the growth.

Preliminary data from Dataforce indicates that in terms of models, the Volkswagen T-Roc outsold the Dacia Sandero by 1,508 units in July, becoming the best-selling model in Europe for the month.

Although the Tesla Model Y's sales grew by more than 500% year-on-year and it was the top seller in June and the first half of the year, its sales ranking dropped to 21st in July. Since January of this year, Tesla has been offering discounts for the Model Y, but sales haven't shown linear growth. The Model Y was the best-selling model in Europe in February, March, May, and June, but it didn't make the top 10 in January and April.

Looking at sales for the first seven months, the Tesla Model Y has fallen to second place, trailing the Dacia Sandero. However, Dataforce's preliminary data does not include sales from countries like Austria, Denmark, and Sweden. If these are taken into account, the situation might change since the Model Y has been selling well in these three countries this year.
