According to media reports, as trade tensions between the European Union and the United States continue to escalate, companies led by Elon Musk are facing strict scrutiny from the EU.

EU lawmaker Daniel Freund has sent a letter to the European Commission requesting a detailed list of funds allocated over the past five years to companies owned or controlled by Musk. The list reportedly includes several of Musk's well-known enterprises, such as SpaceX, Tesla, X, xAI, and Neuralink.
This investigation into Musk's businesses follows U.S. President Donald Trump's implementation of tariff policies targeting specific goods from Mexico, Canada, and China. Trump's second round of tariffs is set to take effect in April and is expected to have an impact on Europe.
According to Reuters, many European companies were not directly affected by Trump's first round of tariff measures. However, given their operations in North America, they are actively adjusting their strategies to cope with Trump's trade policies. Additionally, European businesses are preparing for a potential 25% reciprocal tariff that Trump may impose on EU goods.
The investigation into EU funding received by Musk's companies appears to be a way for Europe to leverage negotiations with the Trump administration on tariff issues.
Daniel Freund commented, "Trump's MAGA camp, including Musk, has a clear objective: to weaken or even destroy the EU. Therefore, we must closely monitor the EU funds allocated to them. To me, it is very clear: the EU should not be providing millions in funding to those who intend to dismantle it."
Freund also seeks to determine how much EU institutions have spent on advertising on Musk's platforms. He emphasized the importance of verifying whether EU funds have been directed toward individuals he believes undermine EU values and stability. This investigation is seen as critical to ensuring the proper allocation of EU resources.
Given Musk's influence, which extends far beyond electric vehicles and rockets, the outcome of this inquiry could have a profound impact on the EU's technology investment policies, transatlantic relations, and broader discussions on public funding directed toward Musk's enterprises.
