Electric Vehicle Sales in The Netherlands Surge By 57% YoY in August

Electric vehicle (EV) sales in the Netherlands have consistently remained high, just a few steps away from being the majority (over 50% share) of sales.

Data from EV Volumes reveals that last month, EV registrations in the Netherlands reached 12,518 units, representing a YoY increase of about 57%, with a market share of 45%, up significantly from 34% during the same period last year. Of these, pure electric vehicle sales accounted for approximately 9,180 units, with a market share of 33%; plug-in hybrid vehicle sales were 3,340 units, with a market share of 12%.

In August, the Tesla Model Y became the highest registered passenger vehicle across all powertrains in the Netherlands. The Model 3, with 751 units sold, ranked second in EV sales (overall fourth).

By the end of August, the cumulative EV sales in the Netherlands for 2023 reached 108,043 units, a YoY increase of 72%, with a market share of 42%. Pure electric vehicles accounted for approximately 60,750 units, with a market share of 33%; plug-in hybrids had about 27,800 units, with a market share of 9%.

In comparison, total EV deliveries in the Netherlands for the entire year of 2022 were about 107,000 units, with a market share of 35%. In 2021, the market share was 30%.

Currently, the Model Y seems likely to become the top-selling EV in the Netherlands for 2023, closely followed by Lynkco 01 PHEV. Interestingly, in the first eight months of this year, the Skoda Enyaq iV overtook its sibling, the Volkswagen ID.4, with the gap between them widening.

As of the end of August, the top-selling EV brand in the Netherlands was Tesla (with a market share of 11.1%), followed by Volvo (8.3%), BMW (8.3%), Peugeot (7.0%), and Volkswagen (6.8%).

At the group level, the highest EV sales in the Netherlands were by Stellantis (16.4%), Volkswagen Group (15.4%), GEELY-Volvo Group (including Lynkco and Polestar brands, 14.8%), Tesla (11.1%), and Hyundai-Kia Group (11.0%).
