Electric Cars Dominate Norway's Automotive Market in January

In January, electric cars accounted for 92.1% of Norway's new car registrations, according to media reports. Tesla Model Y once again became the country's most popular model. However, January is typically a month of reduced sales in the country.

Statistics from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (OFV) show that in January, the number of pure electric car registrations in Norway reached 4,717 vehicles, almost quadrupling compared to the same period last year, an increase of 281.3%. The total number of new car sales in Norway in January was 5,122 vehicles, 3,263 more than the same period last year.

In January, the sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in Norway were only 94 vehicles (compared to 182 vehicles in the same period last year), while the number of pure electric car registrations was 4,717 vehicles. This means that if PHEVs are included, electric cars accounted for 94% of the entire market in Norway.

Tesla Model Y, with 962 units sold, once again became the best-selling model in Norway in January, ahead of Hyundai Kona (282 units) and Nissan Leaf (263 units). In January, Tesla Model Y accounted for 19% of the market share in Norway, while the market shares of the other two models were 5.5% and 5.1% respectively.

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration (OFV) recently released statistics for December 2023 and the entire year. In the full year of 2023, the number of pure electric car registrations in the country was 104,590, and PHEV registrations were 10,169. Over the past 12 months, pure electric cars accounted for 82.4% of Norway's total new car registrations.

So far, the most successful model in Norway remains the Tesla Model Y, with 23,085 registrations in the country for the full year of 2023. This gave the Model Y a market share of 18% in Norway in 2023 (compared to 10% in 2022). The Volkswagen ID.4 followed closely behind, with 6,614 new registrations for the year, capturing a market share of 5.2%; the Skoda Enyaq had 5,740 new registrations, with a market share of 4.5%; and the Toyota bZ4X had 5,395 new registrations, with a market share of 4.2%.
