If windshield washer fluid freezes in winter, here are some steps you can take:
Move the car to a warm place:
If possible, park your car in a garage or a warmer environment to let the fluid thaw naturally.
Start the engine and turn on the defroster:
Let the engine run and activate the windshield defroster. The heat from the engine and vents can help thaw frozen washer fluid in the nozzles or hoses.
Do NOT use hot water:
Never pour hot water on the windshield or washer reservoir-it could crack the glass or damage plastic parts due to sudden temperature change.
Replace with winter-grade washer fluid:
Once thawed, drain the existing fluid and replace it with winter-grade windshield washer fluid, which contains antifreeze and is rated for low temperatures (e.g., –20°C or lower).
Check and insulate the reservoir and lines:
Make sure the washer fluid reservoir, pump, and lines are not damaged. In very cold regions, consider using insulation wraps or installing a heated washer system.
