What is the Crawl Mode in Cars? With it, Off-roading is No Longer a Challenge for Beginners

While the term "crawl" is easily associated with creeping animals like snakes and insects, modern vehicles also have a driving mode referred to as "Crawl Mode". Essentially, the Crawl Mode is a "Low-Speed Cruise Control System". It's also colloquially known as the "Foolproof Off-roading System". With it, even beginners can tackle off-road terrains without the fear of getting stuck.

How Crawl Mode Helps Beginners Master Off-roading

Once the Crawl Mode is activated, the driver doesn't need to press the accelerator or brake pedal; the car will maintain a steady low speed on particularly bumpy off-road surfaces. When driving on slippery terrains, the system minimizes traction loss or skidding, ensuring a smooth ride.

Here's a guide on how to use the Crawl Mode (using the Toyota Land Cruiser as an example):

1:Crawl Mode should be activated while the engine is running.

2:Shift to Park (P) and then press the brake pedal.

3:Next, shift to Neutral (N), activate the four-wheel-drive control switch, and turn the knob to L4.

4:Engage the vehicle's central differential lock and shift to Drive (D).

5:Press the Crawl Mode button, release the brake, and you can manually adjust the crawling speed using the knob below the button.

6:Once the Crawl Mode is active, the dashboard indicator will light up, and the slip indicator will flash.

Points to note when using Crawl Mode:

1:The manual knob, when turned from left to right, gradually increases the crawl speed. There are five levels in total. Low speed is suitable for rocky surfaces, uneven terrains (downhill), and gravel paths (downhill). Mid-low and medium speeds are ideal for uneven terrains (uphill). Mid-high and high speeds cater to snowy areas, muddy paths, gravel roads (uphill), sandy terrains, bumpy paths (uphill), and grasslands.

2:The Crawl Mode will automatically deactivate when shifting to Park (P) or Neutral (N), when the four-wheel-drive control switch is set to H4, or when a door is opened. The dashboard indicator will flash and then turn off.

3:Crawl Mode shouldn't operate for extended periods, or it will shut off automatically. If that happens, park the car on a safe surface and wait for the system to cool down before using it again.

Lastly, it's crucial to note that while Crawl Mode serves as a driving aid, one shouldn't solely rely on it under specific circumstances. Moreover, it may not maintain a consistent low speed on very steep inclines, exceptionally rugged terrains, or snow-covered slippery roads, rendering it potentially inoperative.
