What does shiftlock mean in a car?

Many people are unsure about the meaning of "shiftlock" in a car. In fact, "Shift" refers to changing gears, and "lock" means to lock. So, "Shift lock" translates to "gear lock". It's a specialized device to unlock in certain situations, for example, when the car is unable to start due to a lack of battery or a malfunction. Assume the car is in "P" (Park) mode, it cannot be moved. At this point, you can press the shiftlock button, and the gear can be shifted to "N" (Neutral) so the car can be towed.

How to use the Shift lock button:

Firstly, turn the car's ignition switch to the ACC position and ensure the parking brake is engaged. Press the Shift lock button, and while holding it down, move the gear lever out of the "P" position. Then, push the gear lever to the "N" position. This way, the car successfully changes gears even if it's turned off or malfunctioning.

It's worth noting that the Shift lock feature is only available on some new car models. Older models don't have it. Additionally, only automatic transmission cars have this feature. In some cars, the Shift lock button is protected by a cover which can be pried open.

Furthermore, besides forcibly shifting when the car malfunctions, Shift lock can also be used in parking lots. Some parking attendants might require that cars with automatic transmissions be placed in "N" without engaging the handbrake. This facilitates the attendants moving the cars when necessary. So, in this situation, one can turn off the car in "P" mode, press the Shift lock, and then shift to "N".

Should you randomly press the Shift lock button?

Primarily, the function of the Shift lock button is to lock the car's gear in place, allowing the car to be towed even in a power outage. Pressing the button casually won't cause any immediate problems, but it's advised not to misuse it. This is because the Shift lock helps prevent the car from accidentally shifting from a stationary position and potentially sliding. If pressed, the car loses this basic protection, which might lead to accidents. So, it's best to use it only when the gearbox malfunctions and the car needs to be towed.
