What Does Engine Braking Mean

Engine braking is considered a unique driving skill, achieving a deceleration braking effect by harnessing the kinetic energy of the engine itself.

When the driver releases the accelerator, the collaborative action between the engine and the transmission unleashes remarkable force to counteract the inertia of the moving vehicle, effectively producing a braking effect.

In the process of engine braking, the intelligent transmission plays a crucial role. As the throttle is released, the engine speed becomes inconsistent with the vehicle speed, prompting the transmission to automatically downshift and alter the internal gear transmission ratio.

Compared to common braking methods, such as foot braking, engine braking exhibits some distinctive features. Foot braking relies on friction between the brake disc and brake pads to achieve braking effects.

On the other hand, engine braking achieves the goal of reducing speed by directly controlling the engine speed, making the entire braking process more efficient.

Furthermore, engine braking is effective in addressing issues caused by prolonged braking. During continuous braking, heat generated by friction may cause the brake disc to overheat, thereby diminishing braking effectiveness.

To tackle this problem, engine-assisted braking plays a crucial role. By involving the engine in the braking process and sharing part of the braking load, it effectively alleviates the overheating of the brake disc, maintaining a relatively stable braking effect and prolonging the lifespan of the braking system.
