At the 2012 Geneva International Motor Show, the Volkswagen Group officially introduced the all-new EA211 engine. This engine series is the first to incorporate cylinder deactivation technology in both three-cylinder and four-cylinder engines, demonstrating good fuel economy performance.

The EA211 engine series includes three-cylinder (1.0L) and four-cylinder (1.2T, 1.4T, and 1.6L) variants. The Volkswagen up was the first model to feature the three-cylinder EA211 engine, while the Volkswagen Polo BlueGT was the first to feature the four-cylinder variant. The EA211 engines are constructed using aluminum alloy, making them 22 kilograms lighter than the previous EA111 series. Additionally, the new engine design, along with optimized heat management, reduces internal friction and consumption, resulting in an 8-10% decrease in fuel consumption. To minimize internal power loss and operating noise, a more traditional timing belt design is employed.

Due to Volkswagen's platform strategy, engines within the EA211 series with the same displacement are available in various power outputs. For example, the 1.4T engine fitted in the Golf has a maximum power of 96 kW (131 hp), while the 1.4T engine in the Jetta delivers 110 kW (150 hp). Even within the same vehicle series, the Jetta 1.4T also offers a lower-power version with specifications identical to the Golf 1.4T engine.
