The EA888 engine series, born in 2006, includes two displacements: 1.8T and 2.0T. The 1.8TSI engine delivers a maximum power of 118 kW (160 hp) and a maximum torque of 250 Nm, while the 2.0TSI engine can reach a maximum power of 147 kW (200 hp) and a maximum torque of 280 Nm. The EA888 engine is a newly designed engine by Volkswagen, integrating a range of advanced technologies such as direct fuel injection, turbocharging, and variable valve timing, achieving a combination of power and environmental friendliness.

The key feature of this generation EA888 engine is the integration of the exhaust manifold into the cylinder head. This design advantage allows for lower exhaust temperatures, thus improving the intake efficiency of the turbocharger. However, the drawback is apparent as the exhaust heat is absorbed by the cooling system in the cylinder head, which places higher demands on the cooling system. Additionally, it incorporates an electric wastegate valve and a pressure relief valve, providing precise control over the turbocharger's exhaust emissions.

As the main engine for Volkswagen's current mid-range vehicles, the EA888 engine series has been adopted in various models across multiple brands within the Volkswagen Group, including the Škoda Superb, Volkswagen Passat, and Volkswagen Tiguan, among others.
