Reason for the clunking noise when reversing

In fact, the clunking sound when reversing is a normal clearance noise and is not an indication of a vehicle malfunction. The brake pads of the vehicle are mounted on the brake caliper bracket. Under normal circumstances, the brake pads fit tightly against the front face of the bracket with no clearance gap, so there's no noise when braking while moving forward.

However, when reversing, due to the opposite direction of the vehicle's movement, there's a certain clearance gap between the brake pads and the rear end of the bracket. Thus, when braking, the brake pads will strike the rear face of the bracket, resulting in a clunking sound. Of course, we shouldn't be overly concerned; this is a normal phenomenon.

Noise is a common issue we encounter in our daily driving. When a certain part of a vehicle starts making unusual sounds, it often suggests a potential malfunction in that component. However, some noises are normal and can be easily misinterpreted.

How to address the noise:

Although this is a normal clearance noise, it can still affect the driver's mood to some extent. So, how can we improve this situation?

We can apply a thin layer of grease to the ends of the brake pads where they contact the brake caliper bracket. This can mitigate the noise to some extent.

However, it's crucial to note: when applying the grease, make sure not to get it on the friction surface of the brake pads or the brake disc, as this could impact braking performance.
