Exhaust Backpressure

1:What is it?

When a wave of gas starts to be expelled from the exhaust pipe, it creates a negative pressure on the subsequent wave, known as exhaust backpressure.

1

2:Function

The magnitude of backpressure determines the optimal exhaust range for the engine. Higher backpressure allows the engine to quickly expel the low-speed gas wave influenced by the preceding wave's negative pressure, resulting in improved exhaust performance. However, at high engine speeds, the pressure in the exhaust pipe not only hinders the quick expulsion of the next gas wave but also creates resistance to the discharge of each wave, leading to mutual interference between waves and reduced exhaust efficiency. Consequently, this diminishes engine performance.

In summary, at lower engine speeds, a certain level of backpressure can contribute to increased engine power. However, excessive backpressure in the high RPM range can hinder smooth exhaust flow and result in decreased power output. Therefore, it is important to appropriately reduce backpressure.
