Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

1:What is it?
ABS, which stands for Anti-lock Braking System, is a car safety control system that provides advantages such as slip prevention and anti-locking.

2:What is its purpose?
ABS ensures that the vehicle remains controllable during emergency braking situations, allowing the driver to avoid obstacles. It improves braking performance and reduces braking distance during sudden braking. However, on loose surfaces like sand or snow, ABS can increase braking distance. This is because locked wheels on such surfaces can form mounds by compressing the surface, making it difficult for the vehicle to pass over them. Vehicles equipped with ABS can easily traverse these mounds, enhancing their mobility in off-road or snowy conditions. ABS enhances the maneuverability of the vehicle in various situations, allowing drivers to navigate around obstacles during emergency braking, which would be nearly impossible without ABS, thus greatly improving driving safety.

3:Misconceptions
When a vehicle equipped with ABS applies the brakes, the brake pedal may vibrate or pulsate. This is a normal functioning of the ABS system. ABS operates by applying and releasing the brakes rapidly at a high frequency. Therefore, during emergency braking, the brake pedal may vibrate, and a "clicking" sound may be heard from the brake master cylinder as it continuously adjusts the brake pressure, providing continuous feedback to the brake pedal. In such situations, it is important to firmly press and maintain pressure on the brake pedal while taking appropriate measures to ensure safety.

ABS only activates when the wheels are close to locking up, and it does not operate every time the brakes are applied. ABS can be felt through the sound and feedback on the brake pedal when it is functioning.

If the ABS warning light suddenly illuminates, there is no need to panic as the vehicle's braking system is still functional, but the ABS feature may not be available. Prompt inspection is recommended. However, if the ABS warning light and the parking brake light illuminate simultaneously, it indicates a potentially serious fault in the vehicle's braking system.
