Tesla Finalizes Location For Its First Store in India

According to Indian media reports, Tesla has finalized the location of its first showroom in India. The company has leased a 4,000-square-foot (approximately 371.6 square meters) space in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai, with a monthly rent of 3.5 million rupees (approximately $40,100).

Reports indicate that Tesla's first Indian store will be located on the ground floor of the BKC building. The company has signed a five-year lease for the space, which will be used to showcase Tesla's electric vehicles. Additionally, Tesla plans to open a second store in Aerocity, Delhi.

The decision to finalize Tesla's first Indian store came after the company's CEO, Elon Musk, met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the United States. Following this meeting, Tesla posted multiple job openings in India, signaling its imminent entry into the Indian market.

Although Tesla's entry into India seems inevitable, the American EV manufacturer still faces several challenges. This is not the first time Tesla has attempted to enter the Indian market. The most notable previous attempt was in 2022, but the company ultimately abandoned its plans at that time.

One major hurdle for Tesla remains India's 110% import duty on vehicles. Former U.S. President Donald Trump previously criticized this policy, stating, "All the countries of the world are taking advantage of us, and they do it through tariffs… It's almost impossible to sell a car in India." Musk himself has expressed similar concerns.

India's EV market is still in its early stages, giving Tesla an opportunity to establish itself with its mainstream models. Indian media reports suggest that despite Tesla's relatively high pricing, government incentives could make its electric vehicles more accessible to the average consumer.
