Porsche To Continue Producing Gasoline And Hybrid Models

According to media reports, Porsche has made significant adjustments to its electric vehicle (EV) strategy, potentially scaling back its electrification goals. To address slowing EV sales, Porsche plans to introduce a range of new gasoline-powered and hybrid models.

In July of this year, Porsche abandoned its target of having 80% of its sales be electric vehicles by 2030. With sales of the Taycan-Porsche's only EV-falling by 50% in the first nine months of 2024, Porsche CFO Lutz Meschke admitted during the Q3 earnings call that "the transition to fully electric vehicles is slowing down."

Porsche's challenges extend beyond the Chinese market, affecting Europe and the U.S. as well. In China, competition from more advanced and cost-effective rivals is intensifying. Despite launching an upgraded 2025 Taycan earlier this year-with improved range, performance, and design-sales of Porsche EVs continue to decline.

Meschke told investors, "Many customers, particularly in the high-end and luxury segments, are still showing interest in internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles."

In response, Porsche plans to release new gasoline and hybrid models. Meschke stated, "We will also update our ICE models, such as the Panamera and Cayenne."

This strategic shift comes as deliveries of Porsche's first EV, the Macan, continue to rise. The company expects EV demand to grow in Q4. Although the second-generation Macan will be available exclusively as an EV, Porsche plans to retain gasoline-powered versions in key markets like the U.S.

Earlier this year, Porsche previewed its upcoming electric Cayenne but confirmed that gasoline and hybrid versions are also in development.

Following the electric Macan, Porsche is set to introduce an electric version of the 718, expected to debut later this year. The highly anticipated electric Cayenne is slated for a 2026 release. Beyond that, Porsche plans to launch an ultra-luxury electric SUV positioned above the Cayenne, codenamed "SUV K1."
