Musk mentioned that upcoming Tesla models will eliminate traditional mirrors in favor of electronic ones. He has expressed this viewpoint several times in the past, and he has also listed the flaws of traditional mirrors:
Traditional mirrors increase the aerodynamic drag on a vehicle, potentially reducing an electric car's range by up to 5%. He described this as a "redundant and foolish" design. Musk believes that as autonomous driving matures, this design should be completely abandoned.
