Lucid Delivers First Gravity SUVs

According to media reports, on December 30, U.S. electric vehicle manufacturer Lucid announced on social media platform X that it has officially begun delivering the highly anticipated Gravity electric SUV. This marks the first batch of deliveries since Lucid unveiled the pre-production version of the Gravity SUV in July this year.

Last month, Lucid also launched an online reservation service for the Gravity SUV, with prices ranging from $94,900 to $126,500, depending on the version. At launch, the Lucid Gravity SUV is available only in the Grand Touring version, which boasts an EPA-estimated range of 450 miles. More affordable versions of the Gravity SUV are planned for release by the end of next year, with a starting price of $79,900.

The Gravity SUV is Lucid's second production model, following the luxury Air sedan launched in 2021. Notably, the Gravity SUV features an integrated Tesla NACS charging port, making it the second non-Tesla vehicle equipped with Tesla's proprietary hardware, following the Hyundai IONIQ 5.

Observers noted that the Lucid Gravity SUV underwent driving tests in South Korea in February this year. However, Lucid CEO Peter Rawlinson only disclosed the company's plans for the electric SUV this summer, stating that production would begin by the end of the year.

Lucid began expanding its Arizona plant as early as January this year to prepare for Gravity SUV production. The upgrades included a new general assembly line, a larger powertrain facility, and several additional facilities. Earlier this month, Lucid officially commenced production of the Gravity SUV at its Casa Grande, Arizona, factory.

The delivery of the Gravity SUV is a critical milestone for Lucid, as the company hopes this model will outperform its current sole offering, the Air sedan. CEO Peter Rawlinson has stated that the potential market size for the Gravity SUV is six times larger than that of the Air, given U.S. consumers' preference for crossovers over sedans.

Lucid Air sales have been significantly slower than initially projected. Although the company's sales have grown in recent quarters, Lucid has continued to seek additional funding from its largest shareholder, the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund (PIF), to sustain operations during the first year of Gravity SUV production and delivery.
