EU Initiates Anti-subsidy Investigation: BYD/GELLY/SAIC Motor

Recently, the European Commission announced the initiation of an anti-subsidy investigation targeting three Chinese car manufacturers: BYD, SAIC Motor, and Geely, determined through a sampling method. Earlier this month, the EU declared the launch of an anti-subsidy investigation into electric vehicles imported from China. However, due to the large number of companies involved, the European Commission chose a sampling approach to identify the ultimate subjects of the investigation.

It's worth noting that, although Tesla ships more electric vehicles from China to Europe than any other company, it is not one of the firms currently under investigation by the EU. Moreover, if the EU investigation discovers "evidence of subsidies", an "average anti-subsidy tax" will be calculated, which will apply to all electric vehicles imported from China. This includes models produced in China by major car manufacturers like Volkswagen, Tesla, BMW, and others.

At the same time, the three companies selected through sampling will bear "individual responsibilities" based on their respective subsidies. Previously, BYD's Executive Vice President, Li Ke, in an interview with overseas media, stated that despite the EU's anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese electric vehicles, BYD would continue to drive the company's robust growth in Europe.
