1：What is it?
Scientifically known as a high-flow air filter, the winter mushroom head is commonly referred to as such due to its mushroom-like appearance. It is installed in the intake system of the engine, in front of the intake manifold, and consists of one or several filter components that clean the incoming air.
2：Function
Its purpose is to filter out dust and particles from the incoming air, improving the engine's intake efficiency and ensuring an ample supply of clean air to the cylinders.
3：Types
Air filters can be classified into several types based on the filtration principle, including filtration-type, centrifugal-type, oil bath-type, and composite-type filters. Commonly used air filters include inertia oil bath air filters, paper dry air filters, and polyurethane filter element air filters.
4：Pros and Cons
Inertia oil bath air filters go through three levels of filtration: inertia, oil bath, and filtration. They have the advantages of low intake resistance, suitability for dusty and sandy working environments, and long lifespan. However, these filters have lower filtration efficiency, are heavy, costly, and inconvenient to maintain. They have gradually been phased out in automotive engines.
Paper dry air filters utilize a microporous filter paper treated with resin for the filter element. The filter paper is porous, loosely packed, and folded, providing filtration through the filter element. They offer high filtration efficiency, simple structure, lightweight, low cost, and easy maintenance. However, they have a shorter lifespan. Paper dry air filters are currently the most widely used air filters in automotive applications.
Polyurethane filter element air filters use soft, porous, sponge-like polyurethane for the filter element. They provide filtration through the filter element and have strong adsorption capabilities. These filters possess the advantages of paper dry air filters but have lower mechanical strength and a shorter lifespan. They are commonly used in sedan engines.
