Wheelbase refers to the distance between the midpoint of two adjacent wheels on the same side of the vehicle, measured along a line perpendicular to the vehicle's longitudinal centerline. In simpler terms, it is the distance between the center of the front axle and the center of the rear axle.

2:How Wheelbase Affects the Car
Once the overall length of the car is determined, the wheelbase is the most important factor influencing passenger space. This is because the majority of seating in most two- and three-box vehicles is arranged between the front and rear axles. A longer wheelbase increases the longitudinal space for passengers, significantly enhancing footroom and overall ride comfort. While the wheelbase is not the only factor determining interior space, it is a fundamental one.
The wheelbase also impacts other aspects such as curb weight, total vehicle length, minimum turning radius, driveshaft length, and longitudinal clearance. A shorter wheelbase reduces these indicators. Additionally, the wheelbase affects axle load distribution and the driveshaft's angle. If the wheelbase is too short, it may result in inadequate cabin length or an excessively long rear overhang, causing greater axle load transfer during uphill climbs, braking, and acceleration. This could degrade braking performance, handling stability, and increase vertical oscillations of the vehicle's body, which negatively impacts ride smoothness. Moreover, it increases the angle of the universal joint in the driveshaft.
