In life, unexpected situations may arise, such as not driving your car for a year due to unforeseen circumstances like a pandemic, a temporary work assignment that requires months away from home, or a two-year study abroad program. In such cases, you may wonder what to do with your car when you don't drive it for a year.
Many people's first reaction to prolonged inactivity of their car is to disconnect the negative terminal of the car battery and then leave it, but do you know how long you can leave the car battery disconnected?

Disconnecting the car battery's negative terminal only cuts off the standby power consumption of other components in the car. The battery is still in a natural discharge state, albeit at a slower rate. In general, it's safe to leave it disconnected for 1-2 months, but if the duration is longer, the battery may lose its charge.
In reality, leaving a car parked and inactive for an extended period can have several adverse effects, but you can take specific measures to minimize these issues.
1:Parking: If your car will be idle for an extended period, park it on a level surface, straighten the steering wheel to prevent uneven tire stress over time, and minimize tire deformation. Ideally, store the car indoors or in a sheltered area to protect it from the elements like wind, rain, excessive sun, fallen debris, and other potential sources of damage. If indoor parking is not possible, consider using a car cover to protect the vehicle.
2:Cleaning: Prior to storage, ensure that the car's interior is clean and free of items such as lighters, vacuum containers, perfumes, food remnants, or any items that could pose hazards or generate unpleasant odors due to fermentation.
3:Fluids: Replace the engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and any other liquids with fresh ones to prevent aging and potential damage to the car's internal components. Avoid keeping excess gasoline in the tank to reduce unnecessary weight on the car's tires.
4:Battery: Disconnect the car battery's negative terminal to slow down the rate of discharge.
These precautions are meant to minimize potential damage or issues associated with long-term inactivity. If circumstances allow, it's also a good idea to have a friend or family member start the car periodically to maintain its condition.
