What symptoms will a car show when the ball joint is damaged?

The ball joint of a car, also known as a universal joint, primarily provides multi-angle rotation for the steering mechanism. This reduces vibration and ensures smooth steering. When the ball joint is damaged, the car will display the following symptoms:

1:The car will produce a clunking noise when driving on bumpy roads.

2:At low speeds, there is a noticeable wobble in the wheels.

3:The car becomes unstable during driving, swaying side to side, deviating from its path, and in severe cases, even brake failure may occur.

4:If the gap in the ball joint becomes too large and it experiences an impact load, it can easily break.

Car ball joints don't have a fixed replacement cycle and only need to be replaced when they are damaged. The lifespan of a ball joint is generally determined by road conditions. It is typical to check once every 80,000 kilometers, and under normal conditions, they can last up to 100,000 kilometers. However, if a car frequently travels on rough roads, the ball joint's lifespan may be shortened, and damage may occur as early as 30,000 to 40,000 kilometers.

How to determine the wear of the ball joint:

1:You can turn the steering wheel to feel if there's any wear in the ball joint. The free movement of the steering wheel is generally within 15 degrees. If it exceeds this range and the steering linkage moves without the steering knuckle moving, it indicates significant wear in the ball joint.

2:Lift the car so that the wheels are off the ground, then drag the tires up and down. If the tire can be easily moved up and down, it indicates a large gap in the ball joint. If these symptoms are present, it's crucial to replace the ball joint as soon as possible to prevent driving hazards.
