In Toyota vehicles, you may notice a button labeled ECTPWR. It stands for Electronic Controlled Transmission Power mode, a switch for changing the transmission control mode (Sport mode). What is the purpose of this button, and does it truly enhance the driving experience?

When you press the ECTPWR button, the transmission immediately enters Sport mode. In this mode, the gears shift more frequently and responsively, limited to a lower range. Simultaneously, the engine speed increases, torque output is boosted, providing the vehicle with more powerful performance. However, this high-performance mode is accompanied by an increase in fuel consumption.
In contrast, when you do not use the ECTPWR function, the transmission switches to standard mode. In this mode, the transmission intelligently adjusts the timing of gear shifts based on actual road conditions and the driver's intentions, considering both fuel efficiency and performance.
It's worth noting that ECTPWR appears only in Toyota and Lexus brand models, such as Land Cruiser, Prado, RAV4, and Crown, among others.
The activation of this feature is indicated by a lit indicator, notifying the driver that the vehicle is in power mode. If you wish to temporarily deactivate this mode, simply press the ECTPWR button lightly, and the indicator light will go off.
However, it is not advisable to keep ECTPWR enabled for extended periods. This is because ECTPWR is essentially equivalent to using the S mode and Sport mode, leading to increased fuel consumption and potentially accelerating engine wear.
Furthermore, Sport mode exhibits more powerful dynamics and acceleration effects during overtaking or aggressive driving, making it an ideal choice for situations like highway driving. However, in city driving with heavy traffic, the use of Sport mode may pose safety risks, and it is not recommended in such situations.
