What is the Purpose of Car Head-Up Display (HUD)?

The essence of the head-up display (HUD) in vehicles lies in its use of optical reflection principles to project essential information such as navigation, speed, and oil pressure onto the windshield, enhancing driving safety. This technology is not just a simple display function but an innovative design that allows drivers to keep their eyes focused on the road ahead without the distraction of looking down at the dashboard.

The origin of HUD can be traced back to military fighter jets, where it used holographic projection to allow pilots to easily access the aircraft's status, reducing the need for frequent head-down operations. With advancements in technology, head-up displays have gradually become popular in vehicles, providing drivers with a more efficient way to access information.

Although most mid-range and lower-end models rarely feature HUD, it is commonly found in high-end brands, primarily due to its higher cost. For instance, retrofitting models like the BMW 5 Series and Audi A6L with a HUD can cost between 12,000 to 19,000 yuan, which limits its widespread adoption.

To cater to vehicles that do not come with HUD, third-party manufacturers have developed alternative solutions, such as OBD head-up displays. These systems read information from the OBD interface to provide a projection function, offering vehicle owners another option.
