Airbags are designed to deploy under specific conditions to protect vehicle occupants during a collision. The typical conditions for airbag deployment include:

Collision Type:
Front airbags usually deploy in moderate to severe frontal or near-frontal collisions (generally at angles up to 30 degrees from the centerline).
Side airbags deploy in side-impact collisions.
Curtain airbags may deploy in rollover accidents or side impacts.
Impact Severity:
Airbags generally deploy when the impact force is equivalent to hitting a solid barrier at 12–18 mph (20–29 km/h) or higher.
If seat belts are in use, the threshold may be slightly higher, as the belts already provide some restraint.
Sensor Activation:
The vehicle's crash sensors (usually accelerometers) detect rapid deceleration or specific types of impact forces.
Once the data crosses a set threshold, the system sends a signal to deploy the airbags.
System Readiness:
The airbag system must be armed and functional-the ignition typically needs to be on, and the airbag warning light should not be indicating a fault.
Note: Airbags are not designed to deploy in minor fender-benders, low-speed impacts, or in collisions from certain angles (like rear-end crashes), unless the system determines a severe threat to passenger safety.
