The purpose of the L gear in cars

The L gear stands for low gear, as L is the abbreviation for the English word "LOW." However, the L gear is not just for limiting the highest gear of the gearbox; it has a wide range of uses in different driving scenarios.

When dealing with traffic jams, especially on urban roads, using the L gear can be better than the D gear. Engaging the L gear can avoid the jerky feeling caused by frequent gear shifts in an automatic transmission, while also reducing damage to the gearbox. We all know how annoying it is to constantly shift gears in congested traffic, and using the L gear can greatly improve this situation.

For vehicles with low displacement engines, uphill driving can be a relatively challenging task. However, using the L gear can provide the vehicle with higher torque output, thus improving vehicle power. When facing steep hills, the high torque of the L gear can easily overcome this challenge.

Additionally, when driving downhill, using the L gear can also limit the vehicle to operate in low gear. At this time, we can fully utilize the gearbox's engine braking to control the vehicle's speed, meaning we can use the engine's power for braking operations. This way, we can avoid prolonged braking, reducing the wear on brake pads and preventing a decrease in braking effectiveness.
