Solutions to an Electronic Handbrake That Won't Release

An electronic handbrake, also known as the electronic parking brake system, works on the same principle as a mechanical handbrake. Both generate friction between the brake disc and brake pad to control parking braking. The electronic button in electronic handbrakes replaces the mechanical handbrake lever.

If you find that the electronic handbrake doesn't release after pressing it, don't panic. Unlike mechanical handbrakes where drivers might forget to release them before driving, electronic handbrakes typically have an automatic release feature. All you need to do is fasten your seatbelt, start the car, engage 'Drive' mode, and lightly press the accelerator pedal. The electronic handbrake should release automatically.

Due to the convenience of electronic handbrakes, many models have adopted them to replace traditional mechanical handbrakes. In addition to automatically releasing when the car starts, they also engage automatically when the driver turns off the engine and unbuckles their seatbelt.

If the electronic handbrake remains engaged after trying the methods mentioned, it's likely that there's a fault in the system. It's advisable to call for a tow truck to transport your vehicle to a repair shop. There, mechanics can read the fault codes of the parking brake system using diagnostic tools, allowing them to pinpoint the issue. Alternatively, you can call a mechanic to disconnect the backup cable of the electronic handbrake at your location, then take the car to a repair shop for a thorough inspection.
