Is a lighter car body less safe?

Not necessarily. While heavier vehicles often perform better in collisions due to their greater mass, a lighter car is not automatically unsafe. Modern safety depends more on design, materials, and safety technologies than just weight.

1

Crash structure design: Many lightweight cars use high-strength steel, aluminum, or carbon fiber to create strong frames that absorb impact efficiently.

Safety features: Advanced systems like airbags, electronic stability control, automatic emergency braking, and crash avoidance tech significantly improve safety in lighter vehicles.

Regulations: All new cars must pass rigorous crash tests and meet safety standards, regardless of weight.

However, in a collision between a very light and a very heavy vehicle, the heavier one often has the advantage due to basic physics. But overall, a well-designed light car can still be very safe.
