How to Use a Differential Lock

Differential locks are installed in off-road vehicles and trucks, but many drivers may feel confused about how to properly operate them. A differential lock is essentially a differential with an automatic locking function, primarily designed to improve a vehicle's ability to traverse muddy or difficult terrain.

The mechanism of a differential lock is crucial as it ensures that the left and right axles are tightly locked together. When a vehicle encounters trouble, the differential lock maintains consistent power output between the left and right wheels, making it easier for the vehicle to get unstuck. Additionally, the differential lock can redistribute power, enhancing the vehicle's overall driving efficiency. If one wheel loses traction, the differential lock will redirect the slipping power to other wheels with grip, ensuring the vehicle continues to operate steadily.

To correctly use the differential lock, follow these steps: First, bring the vehicle to a stop and shift it into neutral. Then, move the gear lever to the low-speed four-wheel drive (4WD) mode. Wait for the dashboard to indicate that the differential has engaged before resuming driving. It is important to note that when using the differential lock to escape difficult situations, the vehicle's speed should not exceed 20 km/h, and sharp turns should be avoided to prevent damage to the vehicle's axle.
