How to Test the Goodness or Badness of Sensors

The condition of sensors is a crucial aspect to focus on in automotive maintenance. Various sensors play significant roles in the normal operation of a vehicle, necessitating the need to master methods for detecting whether they are functioning correctly. Several techniques can aid in making this determination.

1. Resistance Check with a Multimeter:

Utilize a multimeter set to the ohm range and measure the resistance values between different terminals of the sensor and the terminals connected to the Engine Control Unit (ECU).

Under normal circumstances, the resistance value should not exceed 1.5 ohms. If the resistance value is too high or infinite, it indicates a potential sensor malfunction, requiring repair or replacement.

2. Oscilloscope Measurement for Camshaft Position Sensor:

Use an oscilloscope to measure the signal waveform of the camshaft position sensor. Measure the waveform between the signal output terminal and the ground terminal. The waveform should be a sinusoidal wave with an amplitude between 0 to 5V.

While the amplitude remains constant, the frequency should increase with the engine speed. By observing the waveform on the oscilloscope, one can determine whether the sensor is operating correctly.

3. Voltage Check of Sensor Connector Plug with Multimeter:

Use a multimeter to check the voltage at the sensor connector plug. After turning off the ignition switch, connect the positive and negative meter leads to terminals 1 and 3, respectively. When the ignition switch is turned on, the voltage should be above 4.5V.

If the voltage is zero, it indicates a potential wiring harness break or short circuit, or a malfunction in the ECU.

In conclusion, the proper functioning of sensors is crucial for the normal operation of a vehicle. By employing appropriate methods and tools for testing, one can promptly identify and address sensor malfunctions, ensuring the performance and safety of the vehicle.
