Car paint typically consists of four main layers:

E-coat (Electrophoretic Coating): This is the first layer applied to the metal body, providing corrosion resistance and improving paint adhesion.
Primer: This layer smooths the surface and enhances the durability of the paint while also adding extra protection against rust.
Base Coat (Color Coat): This is the layer that gives the car its color. It can be solid, metallic, or pearlescent, depending on the desired finish.
Clear Coat: The final transparent layer that protects the paint from UV rays, scratches, and environmental damage while giving the car a glossy finish.
Some high-end or custom paint jobs may have additional layers for added effects or durability.
