How Does a Three-Way Catalytic Converter Purify Exhaust?

A three-way catalytic converter works by using a chemical reaction to reduce harmful emissions from the vehicle's exhaust gases. It contains a catalyst, usually made of platinum, palladium, and rhodium, which promotes reactions that transform harmful substances into less harmful ones. Here's how it works:

Reduction of Nitrogen Oxides (NOx): The converter uses the rhodium catalyst to break down nitrogen oxides, which are pollutants formed from the high temperatures in the engine. It reduces them into nitrogen (N₂) and oxygen (O₂), which are harmless gases.

Oxidation of Carbon Monoxide (CO): The platinum catalyst helps to oxidize carbon monoxide, a poisonous gas, into carbon dioxide (CO₂), which is much less harmful to the environment.

Oxidation of Unburned Hydrocarbons (HC): Palladium works to oxidize unburned hydrocarbons (HC), which are created when fuel doesn't fully combust. It converts these into carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water vapor (H₂O).

In summary, the three-way catalytic converter simultaneously reduces nitrogen oxides, oxidizes carbon monoxide, and reduces unburned hydrocarbons, helping to significantly decrease the harmful emissions from a vehicle's exhaust system.
