Does half-clutching while accelerating burn the clutch? If the clutch has burnt and smelled 5 times, is it still usable?

Using half-clutch while accelerating for a short period of time won't have a significant impact. However, doing so for extended periods can increase wear on the clutch. If you notice a burnt scent while half-clutching and accelerating, it indicates that the vehicle's clutch is already in an abnormal wear state. Hence, in daily driving, one needs to master certain techniques to ensure smooth gear shifting and avoid unnecessary wear on the clutch as well as stalling when starting.

If the vehicle can still operate normally, there's no immediate need for a replacement. Generally, this is considered normal. However, operating at high RPMs or remaining in a half-clutch state for long durations can result in a burnt smell emanating from the clutch plate. Upon detecting this smell, you should immediately let the vehicle idle and allow it to cool down on its own. Continual occurrences can lead to the front wheels losing traction, posing a certain risk, and causing damage to the clutch.

For some, the burnt smell indicates that the clutch is slipping. Continuing to drive under these conditions can lead to wear of the clutch plate, clutch pressure plate, flywheel, deformation of the clutch steel plate, or the clutch plate wearing to its limit or even detaching. Furthermore, prolonged slipping and the resulting intense friction and high temperatures can cause severe wear or deformation between the pressure plate and flywheel. In extreme cases, there's even a risk of fire. Therefore, when experiencing a burnt smell and slipping issues, one should promptly inspect the cause of the slip and make necessary adjustments or repairs before continuing to drive.
