Typically, shifting gears while driving an automatic car does not require pressing the brake. Automatic transmissions provide a convenient way to shift gears, making the driving experience more comfortable. When a driver needs to switch from one gear to another, such as D (Drive), N (Neutral), L (Low), S (Sport), and M (Manual), it is generally possible to do so directly without needing to press the brake.

However, in specific situations, extra precautions must be taken. For example, when shifting from P (Park) or R (Reverse) to other gears, such as when reversing or moving from a parked position, pressing the brake is necessary to ensure safety.
P is the parking gear, and it requires pressing the brake to secure the vehicle. Similarly, shifting to R also requires the assistance of the brake. Although N (Neutral) does not necessarily require pressing the brake when engaged, it is recommended to press the brake to avoid coasting due to inertia, ensuring safety during the process.
When shifting gears, it is essential not only to consider whether pressing the brake is necessary but also to match the vehicle's speed to the appropriate gear for smooth driving. Additionally, the brake pressure is crucial. If the brake pressure is too light, the brake pedal sensor might not detect the braking action, making it difficult to shift gears and affecting the vehicle's braking performance. Therefore, when shifting gears, it is important to apply the appropriate brake pressure-neither too light nor too heavy.
