Defogging: Hot Air or Cold Air? What to Do If the Windshield Fogs Up When Using the Heater

In winter, condensation on car windows typically forms on the interior side of the glass. When the outside temperature is much lower than the inside temperature, using the car heater increases the temperature difference between the interior and exterior, causing moisture near the window to condense as fog on the inner side of the glass over time. So, what should you do if your windshield fogs up when using the heater?

Here are some effective methods for preventing window fogging while using the heater in winter:

Method 1: Use an Anti-Fog Spray.
Apply anti-fog spray evenly across the windshield. After a brief wait, wipe it clean with a soft, dry cloth. This forms a thin, transparent protective layer that prevents moisture from condensing into fog on the glass. Anti-fog spray is particularly useful during cold winter months.

Method 2: Use the Air Conditioner's Cooling Function.
Using the air conditioner in dehumidification mode lowers the humidity in the cabin, reducing fog on the windows. Set the AC to blow cold air toward the windshield to quickly defog it. If the moisture level is too high and the AC alone isn't effective, slightly opening a window can help reduce humidity more quickly by allowing damp air to escape.

Method 3: Use Warm Air.
Drivers know that fogging is most common in cold or humid weather. In such conditions, the warmer cabin air creates condensation on the glass. Warm air can help dry the cabin air and reduce moisture, as well as decrease the temperature difference between the inside and outside of the window. However, defogging with warm air takes more time and requires higher temperatures, so it's best to wait until the fog clears before resuming driving.

In winter, it's generally recommended to use warm air for defogging. While both hot and cold air can technically clear the fog on the outer side of the windows, warm air is preferable during colder months. Additionally, set the air circulation mode to external, allowing moist cabin air to flow outside. If warm air alone isn't effective, use the forced defogging setting to increase both temperature and airflow directed at the windows for faster results.
